A 70-year-old member of parliament in China named Bai Enpei has been sentenced to death for corruption.
Enpei, was accused of collecting bribes, and is the latest official to be disciplined for graft under a campaign launched by China’s President Xi Jingping.
The former senior legislator with China’s legislature, the National People’s Congress, was accused of taking ‘a huge amount of bribes’ and holding excessive assets with unidentified sources.
China began investigating Enpei for graft in August 2014 and he was barred from the Communist Party of China by the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) in January 2015.
State-run Xinhua news agency reports that the CCDI investigation found that Enpei took advantage of his post to seek profits for others and accepted “a huge amount in bribes.”
As part of Enpei’s punishment, his political rights have been withdrawn for life and had all his personal property have also been seized. Enpei has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve.
