Princess Michael of Kent, 72, married to Queen Elizabeth’s cousin, has received public condemnation for wearing a “blackamoor” brooch, considered racist to a gathering attended by Prince Harry’s bride-to-be, Meghan Markle.
The jewelry is considered to be extremely controversial because it symbolizes dark-skinned slaves and servants. Princess Michael reportedly told a group of black people in a New York restaurant in 2004 to “go back to the colonies”. She has however denied the claim.
Princess Michael’s spokesman reacted to backlash the brooch caused, as reported by TMZ. According to her, she’s “very sorry and distressed” about wearing the racially insensitive pin to meet Markle whose mother is black, and further revealed that the royal plans to retire the brooch which she claimed is a gift.
